Benefits of Chiropractic and Pregnancy
Pregnancy is one of the most cherished and sensitive period in a woman’s life. During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes a multitude of changes –not only hormonally but also related to postures and resultant bio-mechanic changes. Abdominal cramps and low back pains are hallmarks of pregnancy period.
Changes that the mother’s body undergoes:
As the baby grows in the mother’s womb , the entire dynamics of the mother’s body changes – the centre of gravity shifts forward, the pelvis tilts back causing the muscles in the lower back to get shortened and tightened , making the hamstring and gluteal muscles to weaken, thereby giving rise to the frequent lower back pains. This unusual alignment of the spinal region gives rise to a few more anomalies in the mother’s body. Cervical and Lumbar cavities open up much more than it is normal thereby placing extra stress in the lower back and neck. The psoas, tensor fascia lata (TFL), quadratus lumborum, and piriformis muscles are also taxed with the extra load of the baby during pregnancy causing tightness and imbalances, Add to it the hormonal changes throughout pregnancy which cause the loosening of the ligaments therefore rendering the joins to be unstable.
Chiropractic Therapy and Benefits during Pregnancy:
Before we move on a further discourse about chiropractic therapy and its benefit during pregnancy, let us first understand the basic concept of chiropractic therapy.
Chiropractic care is health maintenance of the spinal column, discs, related nerves and bone geometry without drugs or surgery. It involves the art and science of adjusting misaligned joints of the body, especially of the spine, which reduces spinal nerve stress and therefore promotes health throughout the body.
As discussed in the section above, due to numerous physiological and endocrinological changes in a woman’s body which is one of the primary causes that result in a misaligned spine or joints. This is exactly where chiropractic care comes to the picture by enabling the practitioner to exercise pelvic balance and alignment. What it ensures is optimal fetal positioning thereby ensuring less painful pregnancy, reduced labor, generally a normal and non-invasive delivery. Optimal baby positioning at the time of birth also eliminates the potential dystocia (difficult labor) and, therefore, results in easier and safer deliveries for both the mother and baby.
Practicing chiropractic care is beneficial to women owing to the following:
- Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
- Controlling symptoms of nausea
- Reducing the time of labour and delivery
- Relieving back, neck or joint pain
- Preventing a potential caesarean delivery
With the society slowly heading towards an alternative line of treatment, chiropractic care will go a long way to define the treatment strategies of not only minor diseases but also for complex ailments like pregnancy or terminal diseases like cancer, etc.
